4th of July Festival in Downtown Brevard

This year 4th of July in Brevard was extra special. Brevard celebrated the 4th of July with a 150th birthday bash and invited the whole town to join the celebration.

Brevard 150th party started at, the Heart of Brevard’s July 4th Festival, in downtown Brevard. “We had a booth set up next to the Transylvania Times, who were selling tee shirts custom designed (by the Times), specifically for the Brevard 150th Anniversary. The tee shirts were a huge success”. Said LeAnn McGraw, project manager for the Brevard 150th Celebration.

The Transylvania Times will have the  Brevard 150 Celebration Tee Shirts available for sale all year and you can purchase them online or go to the Times office.

Get Ready, Set, Go. Start your Ducks.

Brevard 150th Celebration moved the party from the Festival down to King’s Creek at Brevard College for the annual July 4th Duck Race. The Duck Race is run by the Transylvania Community Arts Council (TCARTS) and Brevard 150th partnered with TCARTS for the race this year in honor of the Celebration. The City purchased twenty ducks, and folks were able to sign up at the Festival Booth for a chance to be selected as a duck adoptee. We had two duck winners in the race. Congratulations to those winners!!!

If you have not been to the Duck Race you definitely need to add this event to your bucket list. All the ducks sold, (plastic ducks not the live ones) are released into King’s Creek, and they bob their way down to the finish line. Ten prizes are given out. First duck over the line, his or her adoptee wins $200 and the last duck over the line also wins a prize.  Hundreds of people turn out for the race to cheer their ducks on.

Brevard 150th Birthday Cake is Served

Right after the Race, Mayor Jimmy Harris was on-site to help hand out the prizes along with Tammy Hopkins, Director of TCARTS, and to help cut the 150th Birthday Cakes. The cakes were enjoyed by all and hardly a crumb was left.

Fantastic Fireworks

The party culminated with a fantastic fireworks display. The City of Brevard is one of the major sponsors of the 4th of July fireworks and they went that extra mile this year to light up the sky for the Brevard 150th Celebration.

It was a wonderful day. Happy Birthday Brevard!
